Am considering what the future is for MOOCs tomorrow. Here's a thread with a small selection of interesting / notable articles...1/
One of the oft cited pieces is 2012 the year of the MOOC - nytimes.com/2012/11/04/edu… telling quote from @rayschroeder "How do we fit this into the structure of higher education today?" - Have we really answered that 8 years on? 2/
..and this another around the same time - Sebastian Thrun says "In 50 years, he says, there will be only 10 institutions in the world delivering higher education and @udacity has a shot at being one of them" wired.com/2012/03/ff_aic… 3/
by the end of the decade huge numbers of students have signed up to MOOCs - holoniq.com/notes/the-mooc… and 1,000 of universities have delivered courses (so we're not down to 10 yet!!!) 4/
During that time degrees start to be offered through MOOC platforms and monetisation and credit bearing offerings become more a feature of MOOC platforms classcentral.com/report/moocs-s… 5/
The move into degrees seems to be slowing down but more microcredentials are being created - see this analysis from the fantastic @dhawalhshah and @classcentral classcentral.com/report/moocs-s… 6/
Narrative continues to dominates discourse on MOOCs either they're disrupting or near-death - nytimes.com/2020/05/26/tec… 7/
Major MOOC platforms start to focus on campus based students in response to coronavirus pandemic forbes.com/sites/michaelt… 8/
...so love them, or have feelings of antipathy or apathy towards them...they're still here - what will the next decade look like for MOOCs and MOOC platforms? 9/
