This is a non-apology apology @haralduhlig. You first apologize for having irritated people. Not for the substance of what you said, but for their reaction. Not a good start. [thread]

Then you apologize for having chosen the wrong words and comparisons. Not the substance of your wholesale dismissal of particular goals of BLM, but how you put it. To be fair, your tone was a significant part of the problem. But then you double down:

1. "There are many thoughtful and sensible voices on what needs to be done". You again make yourself the arbiter of what is thoughtful. You have squandered the privilege of being taken seriously on what's thoughtful after the display of the last few days, at least for a while.

2. "If you read those description [sic] carefully, they are largely about truly reforming police." There's the condescension again - we do read carefully, Harald. "Truly" reforming police - again, just another way of saying you know what's right.

3. What then follows are tips for how BLM should go about their mission: "Let me hope and politely suggest that they clearly rectify that (as they did initially, I believe)." You came to apologize, but now you are lecturing the movement you insulted.

4. Then on the last tweet of the original thread: you were "trying to make fun of that radical and untenable view of massively cutting funding". Again, you have gambled away the interest of many of us to listen to you on what's "tenable". This is not what's needed from you now.

5. Then you explain what people on the South Side want: "These people are not against the police. These people are desperate for a police that stands with them". You came to apologize, but now you speak for people on the South Side.

6. Then you explain the police to them: "I believe that many in the police wish to do exactly that. They wish to separate themselves from those that violate their oath to protect and serve". Your view and experience of the police is not important now. An apology is important.

You end with:

"Perhaps this helps."

Not much.
