TONIGHT Chief D.C. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell has unsealed a previously secret grand jury opinion from April 2, 2018, in an unspecified investigation into possible money laundering, sanctions violations and defrauding the United States. washingtonpost.com/context/chief-…
The heavily redacted 13-page opinion granted a U.S DOJ request to waive attorney-client privilege for "emails, audio recordings, and cooperator statements about written or oral communications" that prosecutors had subpoenaed to show a federal grand jury.
Howell found that the unnamed attorney opposing the subpoena "was not acting as legal counsel" in the communications, and even so the U.S. had shown a "crime-fraud" exception applied, such as when a suspect may have lied and caused that lawyer to unwittingly lie to the government
