.@ForumEurope's #cybersecurity event - Executive VP Vestager: "We have avoided a cyber crisis" recalling EU's strength in e.g., cryptography. Need a "single market for cybersecurity" incl. through a solid EU cybersecurity certification framework. 1/
VP Vestager spells out the 4 EU priorities for digitalization: Invest in state-of-the-art connectivity; Stronger industrial presence in strategic parts of supply chain; Build real data economy...as a motor to innovation; Create a business environment that gives businesses... 2/
...a fair chance to compete & scale up. The "common" thread through this is "to guarantee the security of our systems. W/o this, we can’t ensure EU tech sovereignty. Sovereignty isn’t isolation" but is "about having the ability to decide on our own what kind... 3/ @ForumEurope
... of digital economy & society we want to be. If we depend on suppliers for critical components, it means we cannot decide, hence we are not sovereign ... If we don’t trust that we can communicate strongly among ourselves securely and w/o foreign interference... 4/ @ForumEurope
...or if we cannot protect our IP theft, we are not sovereign." 5/ @ForumEurope
Panel on "EU Digital Sovereignty" @ForumEurope: Pierre Chastanet of DGCnect refers to EU data strategy’s common EU data spaces, which will “fuel ML processes driven by European data fueling European AI” - (Can we stop using those terms though, "European AI" does not make sense)
He adds "#Gaia-X reflects how EU and France/Germany are taking the same direction." Refers to Gaia-X as “very promising initiative”. "We are “convinced these initiatives will contribute to EU digital sovereignty” (Not sure everyone is convinced though: ) politico.eu/article/german…
@LiseFuhr of @ETNOAssociation prefers using “Digital leadership” which reflects proactiveness and openness as opposed to "digital technology" which has a foretaste of protectionism.
P. Chastanet HoU at DGCnect adds "This isn't about developing superscalers but the EU industrial ecosystem." Recognizes a project like #GaiaX raises issues of complexity in terms of governance & #cybersecurity "if thousands" of companies participate.
But that's putting the cart before the horse: W/o clear governance & solid #cybersecurity from the start, how can we imagine "thousands" will join a project? #GaiaX
P. Chastanet adds: "Requires proper 5G esp. if we want to do edge computing & assemble & engage networks like competence centers." "Certification is perceived as a "heavy" tool, but it has a role to play. It's a great marketing tool for SMEs...
...to showcase their capacity to deliver secure capabilities & facilitates their participation in public procurement"
