Ok #RxTwitter, straight talk. I had an AA patient come to my pharmacy a while back. He was covered in tattoos, and was trying to fill a Norco script for 10 pills.
By the time he got to us, he had been to at least 6 other stores that told him they didn’t have it. 1/8
Now, There was some kind of typo on the script like Vicodin 5/325 or something, I don’t recall but basically all I had to do was call the MD and he verified the script right away and I was able to fill it. 2/8
In the meantime this young man had spent 3 days in pain because people took one look at him and decided nope, not filling this. Nobody bothered to call for verification and I find it very hard to believe in a 25 miles radius, nobody had 10 Norco 5/325. 3/8
Poor guy was so appreciative once I filled his script he couldn’t stop thanking me. Guys when he left I broke down and cried at the back of the pharmacy because I knew exactly what had happened. 4/8
Soooo, i say that to say this, let’s be honest, people have biases, it’s in our DNA. However I hope and urge y’all to look past any you may have when presented with a pain medication. 5/8
Doesn’t matter if the person is black, white, yellow or purple look at the script not the individual. There are people out there who have a legit harder time getting their medications filled because of how they’re perceived. 6/8
I’m absolutely not trying to preach to anyone, and I know some would call me naive and maybe I am. But since this seems to be a time for self reflection I thought I’d share this one experience that has marked me deeply. 7/8
I’ve attached it to @GhanaboyPharmd post because it is a perfect example of how biases can affect people of color even with their healthcare, and not only from healthcare providers who may look different than you. 8/8
