Bigots whined when First Lady Lou Hoover (R) held a tea for Congressional spouses this day in 1929. Why? Because one of those spouses, Jessie De Priest (L) was Black. Her husband, Oscar, from Illinois, was the first Black elected to Congress in the 20th century

Medgar Evers, a World War II hero (he fought in Normandy in June 1944) graduated from college and went on work for voting rights, better economic opportunities for Blacks, equal access to public facilities and more. He was buried with full honors at Arlington
Evers' murderer was a white supremacist and KKK goon named Byron De La Beckwith Jr. Two murder trials in 1964 resulted in hung juries. But a third in 1994, convicted him. He died in 2001. Here: The face of bigotry and ignorance:
