A writer for The Intercept was forced to issue a "Maoist-style" apology (@ProfDBernstein's words) after a colleague publicly accused him of racism for interviewing someone whose opinion she didn't appreciate.
The editor of an economics journal is being pressured to resign after completely baseless accusations—made by Paul Krugman, Janet Yellen, and others—that his criticisms of the protesters' tactics means he's been thwarting the careers of economists of color.
Some people being cancelled seem like maybe they deserved it. Does Alison Roman deserve it? For having criticized a powerful celebrity, and worn a not-great Halloween costume a dozen years ago? Please.
NYTimes staff say their safety is threatened by the words of a nasty op-ed. This is of course nonsense, and they know it. It's not about safety—safety is the pretense for seizing power.
That's why I'm calling this the 1793 Project. Hyperbole? Sure. Troll-ish, a bit. But let's not pretend the other side of this is arguing in good faith. They see an opportunity and their taking it. This is was the campuses trained them for.
