Dr Olufemi Elias’ nomination as Nigeria’s candidate for the ICJ in Nov 2019 is a very big deal, especially because he is incredibly competent and easily the most accomplished Nigerian international lawyer alive today. Let me elaborate.
In 2015, he was elected in the 1st round of voting (an unusual feat) as a member of the Prestigious Institute de droit International, body reserved for elite international legal scholars. He is the second of only two Nigerians to have been elected since its establishment in 1873.
In 2018, He received the honorary life membership award of the American Society of International Law (ASIL) for his distinguished contributions & service in field of international law. ASIL is easily the most prominent international law association in the world.
He is currently a UN Assistant Secretary General & Head of the UN’s IRMCT & is the highest ranking Nigerian lawyer at the UN. I think he is also the second highest ranking Nigerian in the entire UN system (after Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed).
He has worked at top international roles over the last 20 years. He previously served as a Judge for Staff Appeals at the UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon (Hague) and as Executive Secretary of the World Bank Administrarive Tribubal (Washington DC).
Interestingly, He used to be Legal Adviser & Director of the Legal Division of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Met & worked under him at OPCW & he is an incredibly amazing boss. Also, once worked as Legal Adviser at UN Compensation Commission.
He holds a BA (Jurisprudence) & MA from Oxford. Another LLM from Cambridge & a Ph.D from UCL. Accomplished international legal scholar and also a visiting professor in international law at Queen Mary University.
Would rather not even touch his Father, Judge Taslim Elias. He was President & Judge at the ICJ (the World’s Court), Chief Justice of Nigeria, Attorney General of Nigeria & Dean of the Faculty of Law, UNILAG. He served in every role. True Okunrin meta.
Excited that Nigeria’s Candidate for the ICJ is a person of this repute & maybe we can make history in the process.

On this Funke Akindele’s case, a simple lecture in Criminal Law will allow anyone to see they were charged for a crime that does not exist, and so even if they pleaded guilty, they pleaded guilty for a crime that does not exist.
The basic tenet of criminal law is “no law, no crime”, meaning that for a crime to exist, there must be a clearly stated law. Section 36(12), Nigeria’s constitution notes an act is not considered a crime if it is not contained in a written law. So oral declaration don’t count.
The popular case of R v Taylor also establishes that a crime an act committed or omitted in violation of public law either forbidding or commanding it. So for a crime to exist, there must be a law that specifies the actions that constitute the crime as well as the penalty.

World War II led to creation of UN, IMF, World Bank & present world order. 2008 financial crisis changed financial regulation. 9/11 led to global war on terror,heightened government surveillance & tighter airport security.

My predictions on how #COVIDー19 will change the world:
The future of interaction is online. Instead of asking “why are we doing this online?”, the new question will be “why are we doing this in person?”. People will ask if meetings should simply have been emails. This is affect work, meeting, conferences, religious worship etc
Internet as a right. Government and individuals will start to see internet as a necessary infrastructure. Since outbreak started, schools & work have moved online. People without internet are at a disadvantage. Internet will become as important a right as healthcare and security.

First, COVID-19. Global pandemic has destablised global supply of goods & services. China, most affected by the outbreak, is the 2nd largest economy in the world contributing almost 10% of global GDP (abt 9.3%) + the factory of the world & a large source of foreign investment.
Due to travel restrictions & bans, supplies for many industries that rely on Chinese factories have slowed leading to business disruptions. It has been estimated that the global aviation industry may lost almost $113 billion this year alone to the COVID-19 travel restrictions.
