“My Administration will not even consider the renaming of these Magnificent & Fabled Military Installations.” That’s what the President of the United States said when asked whether he would allow name changes of military bases named after Confederate leaders.
Let me remind you: Confederate soldiers are traitors who fought against the Union. Had they been successful, we would today not be the United States. These "magnificent & fabled military" installations are not named after great Americans who fought for freedom & democracy.
They fought for slavery, the status quo & to preserve their way of life, built on the backs of slaves. Fort Benning, Fort Bragg, Fort Hood, Forts Lee, Pickett & A.P. Hill, Forts Polk & Beauregard, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker symbolize the racism that still exists in America.
The time for us to reckon with our history & put an end to the glorification of some of America’s worst years is long overdue. These past 2 weeks, we’ve seen Confederate statues toppled, backlash against the Confederate flag & calls for us to stop celebrating a shameful era.
Mainly in states that once fought in the Confederate army, those battles, Confederate generals & soldiers are upheld as heroes. Glorification of the Confederacy insults millions of Americans whose families faced decades of slavery & those who fought for their freedom.
Trump has done little to rectify broad injustices in the Black community. Much of his presidency has included anti-Black rhetoric & dog-whistles favoring nationalism & white supremacy. He could help heal that divide with the simple gesture of renaming our military forts.
The U.S. military is typically slow to change, but it’s open to renaming these forts. Trump shut it down, pandering to his base instead of unifying the nation. These Confederate symbols no longer have a place in our military, meant to protect & serve the WHOLE country.
I am not arguing to erase history & never will. But applauding officers who almost 200 years ago stood in the way of freedom & progress is wrong. There are many American heroes of different backgrounds deserving of such honor & it's time for us to recognize THEM.
