Karnataka Government issued a ban on all kinds of online teaching by schools. This is arbitrary, exclusionary and in violation of fundamental rights. In this thread we try to explain why this is wrong and debunk the arguments made for the ban #righttolearn #BanBedaChoiceBeku 1/12
As Covid numbers continue to rise, several parents won’t be comfortable sending kids to school even if the government reopens them. So kids need an alternative option to learn. The ban assumes that education of children till 5th is not important. They also have a #righttolearn 2/12
The ban is denying an option for parents to choose what’s right for their kids. It is denying the freedom of choice & forcefully imposing its decision on free citizens. Let parents decide what’s right for their kid & many can’t teach them by themselves #BanBedaChoiceBeku 3/12
The ban denies teachers the option of practising their vocation. It is preventing them from working, grossly violates their #RightToWork. Schools that cant afford paying teachers will just be forced to lay them off. #BanBedaChoiceBeku #righttolearn 4/12
The ban violates the schools right to trade & thus continue as going concern. With classes banned many parents would refuse to pay fees & schools will be forced to retrench staff and even shut down #BanBedaChoiceBeku #righttolearn 5/12
Many parents who work full time from home or office do not have the luxury of homeschooling or even engaging the child meaningfully. They can’t ignore the needs of parents and deny them their choice #BanBedaChoiceBeku #righttolearn 6/12
Now lets go to the reasons cited for the ban:screen time. Live interactive online classes can't be equated to passive screentime like TV. Without sessions many kids slip back to tv & online games. Suggest restrictions on hours of teaching #BanBedaChoiceBeku #righttolearn 7/12
illogical reason 2: Online sessions increase inequality & rural kids can’t afford that. The government has to figure out ways to improve access & deploy infrastructure to uplift them. Ban is only pulling people down to the common denominator #righttolearn #BanBedaChoiceBeku 8/12
illogical reason 2:Online sessions increase inequality & rural kids can’t afford that. In fact the ban will push parents who can afford to Byjus & Vedantus thus increasing inequality & not solving it.Government should work to enhance access #righttolearn #BanBedaChoiceBeku 9/12
IR3: Only students from private schools are fighting the ban. Just because people protesting is a minority, does justify the ban? Denying them the option to exercise their right to educate their kids in the schools of their choice is a violation of their fundamental right 10/12
And Ban is arbitrary. They have banned schools from doing online classes for kids below 5th standard and we have edtech companies like byjus and vedantu promoting it at the same time for the same class groups. Why these double standards,GoK? #righttolearn #BanBedaChoiceBeku 11/12
We as parents, teachers & academicians request @nimmasuresh @BSYBJP to lift this discriminatory & arbitrary ban
