As someone who wears glasses, I wish I had this spider's superpower - it can literally lose and regrow its night vision in 24 hours. It's a net-casting spider, aka ogre-faced spider, family Deinopidae. This one was in Madagascar, but they're found many places, including in--
--Florida. They're nocturnal hunters that make a springy web net that they use to snare prey. The web isn't sticky with glue (like an orb weaver web), but is "cribellate" silk, made of super-fine microfibers that entangle prey and literally bond to the waxy waterproof coating--
--on their prey's exoskeletons. This fascinating article by @edyong209 explains cribellate silk in more detail. The net is elastic - the spider stretches it wide to drop over prey beneath it, or even flings it at bugs flying past. The net then contracts-- theatlantic.com/science/archiv…
--trapping the prey. This pic shows the bunched up fibers of the relaxed net. Maybe think of it as being like a spider version of--
--a hair net, or maybe being woven out of thousands of itsy-bitsy hair scrunchies. Anyway, back to--
--spider superpowers. Net-casting spiders' huge posterior median eyes give them incredible night vision - apparently better even than that of cats or owls. The eyes don't shine when hit by a light at night, like a cat's, because net-casting spiders don't have a--
--reflective membrane in their eyes (called the tapetum lucidum) for gathering extra light. Instead they have a different extremely light-sensitive retinal tissue layer. But since spiders don't have eyelids or irises, they can't close their eyes or adjust them--
--to the sun to protect this sensitive tissue - so bright daylight destroys it. But no worries, the spiders then--
--literally regrow the night-vision layer in time for nightfall. Btw, while their big eyes make them look intimidating to some people, they're harmless to humans. Also btw, if you google "ogre-faced spider" you'll find some better pics than mine of their crazy-big eyes.
