Too often, people read about the incredible willpower of the likes of Michael Jordan, and imitate it.

And fail.

Willpower only works in the measure it is fueled by passion, revenge, or similar emotions *which are never innate* but always the result of some experience.

2/ Actually, willpower is the confabulation of previous emotional experiences that caused a desire to perform the very actions that brought the successes that others wish to imitate.

Willpower is not something that can be summoned at will.
3/ The only thing that you can do, is to get yourself to start.

Whether that start will produce some experience that will get you "hooked on" is what determines whether you will power through.

Or whether you get yourself to experience a pressing incentive.

Not willpower.
4/ Most people set their goals based on their emotional associations with the outcome.

However, unless they get themselves to desire the action that will take them there, they will only be left with frustration.

That desire is created through emotional experiences.
5/ Hence the saying, do not do what the great did, but seek what they sought.

Do not imitate their actions; not yet.

First, do what it takes to get their drive.

Experience what you got to experience
to get their passion.

The rest will follow.
6/ It is not a coincidence that great coders are more likely to share a passion for hacking video games than a university course.
7/ To sum it up:

If you desire an outcome, begin by getting yourself passionate with the actions that take you there.

Begin by experiencing their benefits.

It won't be sufficient, but it is likely to be necessary.
