Reading Matthew presently. Ch.8 today. Stuck on this: “I tell you many will come from east and west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.” One time we ate breakfast at a nice hotel in Houston and Justin Timberlake & Cameron Diaz were there.
I missed them.
They were sitting right behind me. My firstborn Amanda - young adult by then & sitting opposite me - kept making weird faces at me. Did head tilts and all. I thought maybe she was annoyed at her father. I kept kneeing him to stop whatever he was doing. He obviously persisted.
I have to say the confusing commotion compromised my malt waffle. We paid out. Walked through lobby toward the parking lot. Amanda grabs me by the arm. “Mom!!!!!!” Tells me. I had to be physically restrained to keep from running back into the restaurant. Everyone saw them but me.
Still furious.

Abraham, Isaac & Jacob. For real. After all the times we’ve studied the patriarchs. All the sermons. All the rounds of “Father Abraham had many sons. Many sons had Father Abraham” & all the quoting “Abraham believed God & it was counted to him as righteousness.”
First time Isaac LOLs, we’ll slap each other on the back, so satisfied that’s it’s all turning out, & howl, “That’s Laughter!“ When Jacob takes the mic to make a toast, we’ll all stare to see if he still walks with a limp from wrestling with the angel at the ford of the Jabbok.
It’s all going to be fantastic. We’ll see Joseph. If I were a betting woman, I’d lay down 10 bucks right now that he’ll have on that annoying coat but all our jealousies will be gone by then.

We’ll see if Moses really looks like Charlton Heston. Maybe David will play the harp.
We’ll sit at the table with the Sons of Thunder. All the Marys. Stephen will be beautiful. Not a bruise on him. And Paul. Oh my goodness, Paul. We’ll find out he wrote Hebrews. I’ll say I always knew it. We’ll see Lydia & all her spiritual sons & daughters, the church in Europe.
And we’ll see Jesus. And he will light up the universe with his face. Jesus, who is everything to us. Our sun & our moon & our stars. The light of every lamp. The Bread & the Wine. I cannot wait.

Don’t miss it. Every great meal we’ve ever had whispers “Come, come to the Table.”
