No time rn so fast thread bc some folks being a lil too quick to celebrate as if there's been some fundamental change at the NYPD

1) This announcement is smoke & mirrors, meant to demobilize the HUGE movement against police violence. Make no mistake, this isn't a "seismic shift"
2) Deja vu: NYPD has played this exact move b4. In 2002 as part of Daniels (lawsuit filed after NYPD murder of Amadou Diallo..filed by grps that founded @changethenypd), NYPD disbanded Street Crimes Unit -unit doing most stops at the time. SCU later ->> current anti-crime unit
3) Fundamental change was promised then too...

What happened: Instead of SCU doing majority of stops all NYPD started doing many more unconstitutional/abusive stops leading to nearly 700K reported stops in 2011. Rebranded "anti-crime" units just as brutal & lawless as SCU was
4) Good sign that NYPD feels like they need to announce "seismic shifts". That's only bc of HUGE & ORGANIZED grassroots movement pressure being applied.

(we need to keep it up!)

We can't fall for the PR moves tho. This isn't change, it's rebranding.
5) Cops aren't being fired, NYPD hasn't been defunded yet, $/power hasn't moved to communities.

NYPD announcement is partially response to organized #DefundNYPD & #NYCBudgetJustice pressure +media exposure of widespread police violence at recent NYC protests.

But it aint change
6) At best this is limited cosmetics & rearranging furniture.. But it's also dangerous. Re-assigning (instead of firing) some of the most brutal, vicious cops on the force into regular patrol sounds horrifying.

And, they're counting on us not understanding what they're doing.
7) Plainclothes cops aren't being eliminated. They're not even transitioning all anti-crime: Transit "anti-crime" will stay intact (e.g. fare evasion cops/homeless harassment). We don't know what's up w-boro anti-crime units.

They're trying to demobilize us. Don't fall for it
8) In coming days we shd expect more fancy proclamations of "change" at NYPD.

We can't be fooled/distracted. We need to keep fighting for *at least* $1B cut from NYPD FY21 expense budget. $1B is a floor, not a ceiling

Keep protesting/calling to #DefundNYPD for #NYCBudgetJustice
9) We need to keep demanding firing of cops who've engaged in gender-based violence, killed, brutalized, abused their authority & stayed silent while witnessing other cops do this.

Musical chairs they're doing w/anti-crime unit isn't change it's a game. Don't fall for PR spin.
