We’re at a protest near Tiguex Park. (See info last pic) everything seemed to be peaceful until members of the New Mexico Civil Guard came out armed and spoke with protestors.
The New Mexico Civil Guard has shown up to many peaceful protests in recent weeks heavily armed. They won’t really speak with us but say they’re here “to do what the founding fathers would have: protect the statues”
The Don Juan De Oñate statue was removed in Alcalde, NM today. The RA county manager says it was solely to protect the statue because they got wind of protests planned there too. They haven’t decided what to do with the statue. It’s in storage now.
Back to Albuquerque, the prayer gathering is actually across the street in Tiguex Park. But another small crowd is gathered around the statue on 19th and Mountain.
We clearly have 2 groups competing here. One doing a Native American prayer and one repeating Hail Mary. Tensions are rising here
Lots of back and forth
The Crowd is now calling her a Karen. Telling them to disengage. The woman claims she’s here to protect the statues.
This is the protest across the park. People are speaking about the history of Onate
The protest at the park also had push back and words from 2 people. Organizers are asking people to ignore them.
NMCG and protestors are blocking right line of road. Prayer gathering at park is over
Cars are figuring it out
Listen in
Crowd chanting “go home” to what they call Mr. Karen
Woman with knife at Statue Onate’s neck. This protest is much different than any other in ABQ lately. No helicopter. No police.
Woman brought all lives matter sign to protest. Someone takes it throws, another picks it up stomps on it and rips it.
All members of this armed New Mexico Civil Guard stepped up to the statue and protestors. Now chanting “go home racists”
Things just intensified more. Still no police. @KOB4
Chain is up and around @KOB4
Someone’s been shot. Multiple people calling 911. Chaos.
New Mexico civil guard members and one other man being arrested. All weapons being taken from them. Still no ambulance here. Police are here. Unclear who fired shots
You can see the Armed men surround a man in a blue shirt. Very unclear who shot @KOB4
At the end you can hear 4 gunshots. @KOB4
Tear gas. Very loud Flash bang. Non lethal projectiles in a matter of seconds.
It’s pushed back protestors. They are now continuing to pull down the statue.
People upset police aren’t interviewing protestors about man who was shot. Police still holding the line.
Protesters are letting air out of Duncan tires. Bus that police came in

This is recorded off our camera of the flash bang
Man in blue shirt is who protestors claim fired the gun.
Also recorded off our camera. Man in blue shirt being put in car
Crowd is dispersing.
We just obtained video of the shooting.
Just a few things.
The New Mexico Civil Guard is not affiliated with police. They are an independent milita group and our state and city leaders have condemned them. The first image from @GovMLG
Should have made that more clear. We’ve seen this milita group at various protests over the past few weeks.
The man in the blue shot seen firing gun/being arrested did not seem to have ties to the militia group. But it was clear he was not happy with the protestors.
