WHEN YOU THINK THAT THIS GOV'T HAS REACHED THE PEAK OF MISOGYNY AND PERVERSION, HEAR THIS OUT: This is Ina Nasino's mother pleading before the Supreme Court to release her daughter who is about to be a mother next month. She's detained in overcrowded Manila City Jail (thread)
Ina was arrested together w/ two other activists Alma Moran and Ram Bautista in Bayan-Manila office, in the middle of the night WHILE THEY WERE SLEEPING. The police planted firearms and explosives in their rooms that caused their immediate arrest.
Ina is a member of urban poor organization Kadamay. She organizes residents of Smokey Mountain, Tondo. Like many organizations critical of the govt, Kadamay is also being red tagged as front org of the CPP-NPA. At the time of her arrest, she stayed in Bayan-Mla.
They were charged with illegal possession of firearms and explosives, a common case charged to activists, because it is too convenient for the authorities to recycle evidence and plant it in crime scenes (y'all know that) and stand in court and be each other's fucking witnesses
Ina and other political prisoners that are vulnerable to covid-19 in our subhuman jails filed a petition before the SC to release them on humanitarian grounds. It has not been heard until now. INA IS ABOUT TO GIVE BIRTH NEXT MONTH.
As her lawyer, it gives me a myriad of anxieties. I could not imagine her in jail nursing her baby or worse, be separated from her newborn child. IT IS JUST TOO DANGEROUS FOR THEM CONSIDERING THE CURRENT HEALTH CRISIS WE ARE FACING.
It is not the first time that a pregnant woman like Ina was jailed by the state who is hell bent on targetting their "enemies", a.k.a. activists and dissenters critical of policies of the govt as NPAs (yes even pregnant women for christ's sake)
In 2014, govt arrested Andrea Rosal. Her baby died after delivery. This is the image of Andrea that flashed before my eyes as soon as the elevator opened at the PGH. She was holding her lifeless baby while she was on a wheelchair. She was being surrounded by jail guards.
A photocopy in fact. Andrea named her baby Diona. May be if she lived, she will also be tagged as an NPA dahil kamukha rin siya ng lolo niya. Andrea's case was later dismissed by the court.
Months after Andrea's arrest, another pregnant woman was arrested. She was profusely bleeding dahil mahina ang kapit ng bata, she was advised to go on a bed rest.
She is Miradel Torres. Despite heavy bleeding, she was brought inside a camp and underwent interrogation. She was later brought in Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig where she continued her pregnancy until she have birth to a tiny little boy that could fit in a shoebox.
Miradel named him Payter--very apt for a child who has endured enough fascism of the state while inside her mother's womb but made it through. For several days, I visited Miradel at PGH to help her take care of the baby until the day came that she needs to be returned to jail.
Miradel went back to jail with her baby. Payter became familiar with all her mother's co-detainees. He was everyone's baby. There came a time that Payter was starting to recognize colors but Yellow was the most striking color for him because it was the uniform of all inmates.
She was christened inside the jail and I was his ninang. Payter was growing fast and the jail isn't just the place for kids like him. He was taken away from her mother & was brought to his grandparents
Miradel's case dragged on for years. She wasn't able to see her child. Later, Miradel's cases were all dismissed.
GANITO KATAKOT ANG GUBYERNO SA MGA KABABAIHAN. Walang sinasanto kahit buntis.
Free Ina Nasino! Free All Political Prisoners!
