A short thread, borrowing from my forthcoming book HOAX:

Trump's campaign launch, 5 years ago today, was like the launch of Fox News. Both start-ups were mocked by insiders and embraced by outsiders. Trump sought to fill the same sort of void in politics that Fox filled on TV.
While others heard a rambling and racist campaign speech, Fox's Kimberly Guilfoyle said "it was like The LEGO Movie, the theme song 'Everything Is Awesome.' It really got me excited. I felt richer just listening to him!" Trump had big promoters on TV from day one.

Trump taped two TV interviews on the day he entered the race: One with ABC's @GStephanopoulos, the other with Fox's @BillOReilly. He wanted to reach both Americas.

Breaking: VOA director Amanda Bennett (@abennett) has resigned, per an internal memo, on the heels of Trump appointee Michael Pack taking over VOA's parent agency.

A TV host's personal life is not automatically newsworthy. But a relationship between two of Fox's biggest stars? That's newsworthy. Whispers about Hannity and Ainsley Earhardt have been widespread inside Fox for years, but never reported publicly. (2/6)
Last year, a source for my book mentioned Hannity was separated from his wife, assuming I already knew. Other sources confirmed it. Some said the gossip about Hannity & Earhardt was an "open secret," so much so that "Fox & Friends" staffers wondered whether I'd report on it (3/6)
