One way we remind each other of the awesome condescension of God is saying things like "the God who made the universe loves you, knows you by name." And we wave our hands around to gesture at the entire universe, to establish some perspective: All that! Its maker! Little old you!
That's good stuff. (Waves hands around & points to universe to establish perspective.) But there's something beyond that: God is greater than just being a universe-maker. In the depths of the divine being, God is great, greater. Not just big, but without measure.
Waving your hands around & pointing to that measureless depth of divinity, infinitely more than all of creation, is even harder than gesturing at the universe. What gesture shall I borrow to direct your attention to God in himself? Whither shall I point?
Turning your attention from little old you to the maker of the universe is a great first step. And that first step's a doozie, as they say. But the next step, from all creation to the God for whom making all the stars was not a difficult project, is more. Much more.
The difference between me and the entirety of creation is very great. But the difference between the entirety of creation and God is immeasurably greater. When God condescends to know you and call you and love you, he is coming to you from across that greater difference.
I don't blame us for not talking about this very much. The old "the God who made the universe loves you" routine is hard enough. But above that. Behind that. Beyond that. God.
(p.s. Imagine if the kind of internet atheist who thinks it's funny to say "oh you think the god who made the whole dang universe cares about an earthling haw haw how egotistical" could frame in their minds any inkling of what the actual Christian claim is.)
