What people call nepotism is simply the privilege of people more privileged than us. If KJo wants to put his friends in movies he produces it’s his business. That he has a show where he bullies those less privileged survives because others even less privileged like it.
The real problem is deplatforming, ensuring that people who you don’t like don’t get work by using your privilege to deny others opportunities. Having experienced it myself in the publishing world, it is insidious, even more maddening because people will gaslight you.
The discrimination is in your mind they say, trying to make you believe you are not worthy enough. You can point to objective metrics, and ask why that person, and they will shrug and give some made up reason. This is what drives people to the edge.
As we see with multiple people, (and I know this myself) not only are you denied opportunities but then you are also denied your grievance, you either are expected to shut up & bear it (obviously there is so much that one can bear) or risk being called an attention seeker.
The movie industry knows that the big stars will always have a sustaining fan base in the way Trump has, that famous line “I could shoot someone on fifth avenue” was a rare moment of honesty from Trump, nothing he does will take away his fan base. Nothing.
The solution isn’t to reduce their Instagram followers, that doesn’t affect them in the least. The solution is to support those that are being deplatformed, make OTT as big as the theater, make ebooks as big as published books. Cut out the middleman.
I have been told to “stop imagining” things when I have proof I am not imagining things. One doesn’t stop writing based on imagination. Only I know what I have gone through myself (and my immediate family) but I had the privilege to walk away, because I have another job.
Rather than boycott those that are supremely powerful, do they positive thing, promote those trying to break that hold by creating a viable positive alternative. This is not a new idea, this was Tagore’s whole point in Ghare Baire.
I don’t know why you crib so much someone commented on my FB. I am not cribbing much, I barely highlight specific incidents so that I am not accused of fishing for sympathy, I am extremely conscious of that. The reason I have to say is because my silence helps my oppressors.
My way out is to do the best I can to create an alternative: hence the podcast. Hence the attempt to increase audience, or to get Patreon contributions so I can show an investor that people at least pay this much.
