This is, honestly, the thing about the "police abolitionists are asking for more places to be policed like white suburbia" take that throws me. White suburbia absolutely has a policing presence. It's just always, always understood to be protecting "you" from "them."
There is, in fact, a vision of policing that says that's what everyone should have! But it's a reformist vision that is focused on making police accountable and trustworthy to the communities they police. (2/3)
Whether that's possible is an open q. I've been thinking about this blog post by @JesseJannetta ever since I read it. urban.org/urban-wire/it-… (3/4)
Seems to me: abolitionists, now more than ever, are confident an unpoliced world is possible (even tho most acknowledge there's a lot that communities will need to work out together). Reformists, OTOH, appear to be questioning whether "police protect everybody" is possible. (4/4)
To be super explicit: I am not saying that the goal/vision of abolitionism is white suburbia. I am saying (per follow-up tweets!) it's jarring to see it as an abolitionist rhetorical exercise, when it _is_ the vision/goal of many reformists invested in police/community relations.
