16 yo Cornelius Frederick was at a for-profit family services facility in michigan. he was killed after being restrained by a staff member for throwing a sandwich. please sign the petition calling for lakeside academy to be shut down: change.org/p/gretchen-whi… #JusticeforCornelius
please remember cornelius when you see calls to replace cops with social workers and remember that many are still causing harm at for-profit juvenile and adult facilities. we need to abolish all prisons and police.
cornelius was only a child and a ward of the state. they were supposed to take care of him but they killed him. after he died it was revealed he had coronavirus, as did 40 others at lakeside. for-profit facilities are death mills—shut them down

one time i was being considered for a panel on media unions and the organizer explicitly told me that she reached out to me because all the other speakers were white but THEN she said "i don't know if you count as a journalist because you do astrology."
i explained that i've worked in media for 5 yrs, mostly as a journalist, and all my organizing experience is in newsrooms. my union work mostly consists of 1-on-1s with unit members who do all kinds of journalism-adjacent work, like illustrators and animators.
i've run into this problem a lot in media organizing: you cannot hold me up as an example of underrepresented voices in the labor movement and then devalue my work in the same breath.

the more i think about it the more i remember and realize the whole story is unhinged? i joined a queer co-ed frat in college and after i became an official pledge, this fully grown man—who had already graduated and was living in japan—found and called my personal cell number

this racist media boiling point has coalesced over decades but especially the last 5 years with the rise of digital media organizing. as the only poc on my bargaining committee for the majority of contract negotiation, i encountered the same problems again and again.
in employee surveys, diversity is a consistently huge concern for staff, yet we don't have the tools to address it because:
1) many pubs aren't unionized and therefore not protected by a contract/don't have collecting bargaining power
2) even with a union, media is such hell that there is always a seemingly more urgent fire to put out, like layoffs or other abuse scandals
3) staffers of color are overworked and (rightfully) afraid of retaliation, so our committees end up as white as our corporate leadership

we have to protect her at all costs. after filming eric garner’s murder, ramsey orta was targeted and harassed by police, thrown in jail and forced to spend time in solitary confinement
ramsey orta has so far spent more than a year in solitary confinement and still faces life-threatening abuse in prison, a hotspot for coronavirus. he's set to be released this summer and @NYGovCuomo has the power to grant clemency but it's clear the state would rather he die
