 My father came from a poor family of 10 children (2 died young, so there were 8 eventually. He was (is) brilliant & in the small village where he grew up, had friends across caste & class lines. +

 Thanks to his gift of gab he gained access to friendships with rich peeps (read this statement in the context of the 50s & 60s) who would've otherwise never given him the time of the day. (Those folks are still his friends 😊)
He got into Engineering college on merit +

 & paid for his first 3 years via a scholarship which he eventually lost because he was a student leader & threw the bad mess food on the VC's table. 😬Yup. He was THAT dude. (He flirted with RSS & ABVP, but got disenchanted.)
