My 7 year old snapped this photo and it made me think.
I’m the daughter of an immigrant who came here seeking a better life. My dad loved our flag & he loved our county. I’m ashamed of the “man” at the helm and I’m sad for this nation, but I do believe in the promise of America.
2/ We are very far from a perfect Union. We are far from equality for all. But I believe, I truly do, that if we keep striving to get there, we can make that America a reality. The flag represents an ideal. The goal we have yet to reach. America hasn’t met her potential yet...
3/ But those ideals, the ones where every single American has the same opportunities to succeed, the one where your reality is not decided by the color of your skin, your gender or the way you self identify... those are within our reach. But we have generations of work to undo.
4/ We have generations of work ahead. Right now, we are at a crossroads. If we succumb to the wave of hate & intolerance that is trump & his GOP, we all lose & that flag represents nothing. We have to fight. Not for the flag, but for who we want to be as a nation & as a people.
5/ I get emotional when I think about the damage trump has done to this country. Racism, bigotry, misogyny, intolerance- they’ve always been here, but trump is telling those people that it’s ok. It’s not ok. It can never be, ok. I’m gonna fight, because that evil cannot prevail.
6/ My daughter took that picture of the flag which hangs on our house with her little pink Polaroid. I love it.
I want her to grow up in an America where our flag represents a nation striving to be a place FOR everyone & not one of division, intolerance, bigotry & hate. The end.
