Map of the % of the Asian population that is Vietnamese, by state. Only 10.9% of the US Asian population is Vietnamese, but that number is 41.9% in Louisiana (0.6% of the total Louisiana population). Many Vietnamese settled in/around New Orleans after the Fall of Saigon in 1975.
Vietnamese were drawn to Louisiana by it's similar climate, shared history of French colonization, & the fact that many fleeing Vietnamese were Catholic so were brought specifically to New Orleans by Catholic Charities. Mary Queen of Vietnam Church is a center for the community.
A notable Vietnamese Louisiana resident is Ánh Quang "Joseph" Cao, who was elected to represent Louisiana's 2nd CD (New Orleans) in 2008. He was the first Vietnamese-American to serve in Congress, and the first GOP Rep for New Orleans since 1891. Cao lost re-election in 2010.
