I've been mostly engaged with Fathers' Day, but earlier I took the data from @COVID19Tracking and broke them down by region of the country. You can clearly see how the apparent decline in cases has been driven by the declineof the outbreak in the North East 1/n
Caveat, these are daily positive tests which are not necessarily the same as cases due to different local reporting. But nevertheless, right now those are the highest they've been since early May 2/n
There has been a shift, from an outbreak concentrated in the northeast (that's what NE means, not New England, should have noticed that -duh) to one that is increasing in many more places, the SW, the Sunbelt, and the Atlantic regions. The forest fire has spread 3/n
Now, deaths are expected to lag behind for a lot of reasons. First of all people infected now take time to get really sick and die. Second I think it's actually true that many states are doing more effective testing now than the NE was at the same stage of its outbreak 4/n
You can see this in the younger median age in eg FL. This isn't a cause to chill however - as community transmission increases in all age groups the risk to vulnerable people increases with it. And we all know that attempts to reduce transmission are minimal or even declining 5/n
But what makes me most worried is all the different places on the up. That's not a local data or reporting issue. That's the pandemic doing its thing. And it will keep on doing it. 6/end
