Why did @AmbJohnBolton go to work for President Trump? "I thought it was possible [to] have a more normal, more organized, more coherent... policy formulation and implementation process." What happened instead, on @NPR @MorningEdition @UpFirst: "npr.org/2020/06/21/881…
And here’s the full transcript of the @NPR interview with @AmbJohnBolton: npr.org/2020/06/22/881…
Bolton talks of the president’s affection for dictators, and recounts the erratic way Trump almost canclled, then attended a summit with Kim Jong Un: “Well, he said that... back in the day... he always wanted to be the one who broke up with the girl first...”
“... He didn't want the girl to break up with him. And he used that to describe whether he would cancel the summit with Kim Jong Un first or whether we would risk the North Koreans canceling it...”
“And I thought it was an insight into the president, candidly given, that showed how he approached this. As opposed to looking at it from the perspective of what our ultimate strategic interest was.” @MorningEdition @NPR
More Bolton on @NPR: "A lot of people... say... "How could you have gone into the administration to begin with?" or "How come you didn't resign at this point?" ... We thought we were trying to help out, pursue policies that protected American national security." @MorningEdition
Having spent 17 months in the administration, Bolton says of Trump: "I don't think he's really competent to be president. It's put me in a very difficult dilemma. I voted for him in 2016... but... I just cannot vote for him again." Will write in a conservative. @MorningEdition
