Another important part of the immigration ban is that it foreshadows more drastic changes that the Trump administration wants to make to the immigration system through regulations. Here's a thread on each of the new "previews" in the immigration ban.

First, the President calls on the CDC to "provide guidance" for new COVID-19-related immigration bans.

There's already one in place at the southern border, blocking every asylum seeker (Stephen Miller's wildest dream), so what more is needed? Negative COVID test before a visa?

Next, the President calls on DHS to create new regulations on employment-based immigration and H-1Bs.

A Breitbart article suggested this means creating new requirements that these jobs pay above-average wages (to disincentivize employers). That would be almost certainly illegal.

The Ban also calls on DHS to pass a new rule requiring that all visa *applicants* to *first* give DHS all of their biometrics information before even APPLYING for a visa.

Next, the Ban calls for stripping work authorization from certain immigrants with final orders of removal who have prior criminal convictions.

These are usually people who have been provided humanitarian protections from persecution or torture.

It's to get them to leave.

Finally, this weird provision about the "efficient allocation of visas." I've seen suggestions elsewhere on Twitter that this is a plan to end the H-1B visa lottery and instead grant visas to those employers offering the highest wages first.

The H-1B changes to push for higher wages are truly bizarre, unless you realize the goal; if companies have to pay H-1B workers MORE than Americans, they'll have an economic incentive not to hire them.

But also, this rule would seem to require that Americans get paid less, so...
