Excellent by @WesleyLowery. What journalism calls its virtue--objectivity--is a pillar of its systemic racism: "the mainstream has allowed what it considers objective truth to be decided almost exclusively by white reporters and their mostly white bosses."

/ @WesleyLowery: "What’s different now, in this moment, is that the editors no longer hold a monopoly on publishing power. Individual reporters now have followings of our own on social media." And importantly, so does the public. *That* is what led to this moment.
/ And so the question becomes: How do journalists work in collaboration with communities rather than as agents of surveillance? How do journalists amplify the voices of communities rather than their own? How do journalists now listen to those voices first?
/ After half a century, newsrooms have failed abjectly at diversifying staffs and especially management: at sharing power. The question I struggle with: Is it time to give up and support instead media from communities, new and old?
/ Most newsrooms are not diverse. Most newspapers are controlled by hedge funds or exhausted families & won't invest in diversity & innovation. So what do we do with them?
