"The concentration of land ownership, one of the fundamental reasons for endless cycles of violence in this country, has been untouchable for five centuries in Brazil"
If I were forced to answer the question, "Why did murderous right-wing coups happen in the 20th century" in two words, those two words would be "land reform."
Guatemala 1954, Brazil 1964, Indonesia 1965, Chile 1973, the list goes on and on, the forces of reaction swept and stopped land reform, to maintain the feudal control over natural resources, that remains the state of affairs in much of the developing world to this day
It's very notable that in countries where the US was strategically invested in the development of fully-functioning capitalism (South Korea and Japan, for example) land reform was carried out under Washington's supervision. Elsewhere it was often seen as dangerous "communism"
Now, if I had MORE than two words to explain the phenomenon, I might write a book (link in bio), but the threat of land reform is often what gets the very powerful elites behind violent repression. See 'aksi sepihak' in Indonesia, Jango's attempts to take on his own class, etc.
