Yesterday, 22 Jun, was the birth anniversary of one of Navy's most erudite and scholarly officers. VAdm Mihir K Roy, nickname " Micky" Retd as the FOCinC, Eastern Naval Command, capping an illustrious 40 year naval career.
An Observer and ASW specialist, he pioneered Air ASW in India as the first CO 'King Cobra' of the 310 squadron (Breguet Alizes). He later commanded, a destroyer INS Godavari, a frigate INS Brahmaputra and the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, and the Eastern Fleet.
He was Director Naval Intelligence in 71 war & played key role in strategic planning for the war. Later he played imp role in handover of Maritime Recee fm AF to Navy. He also did a stint as Senior Directing Staff at NDC. He attended the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) UK
His early service was in minesweepers, battleships & cruisers of Royal Navy before transferring to the Fleet Air Arm.
A Master's in Eco and Pol Sc, Micky grew up in Tamilnadu and spoke fluent Tamil. He survived two crashlandings and a helicopter emergency landing in his career.
Post retirement he served with Govt of India for many years with Dr Raja Ramanna, his College Friend in key govt projects. Known for his academic brilliance, he was later Editor Indian Ocean Journal, Capt Comdt of Navy, Ford Foundation visiting fellow @ Univ of Pennsylvania, USA
He was the first officer from services to be selected for prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru fellowship in 1989. His book "War in the Indian Ocean" is still one of the most authoritative accounts of Indian Navy's exploits in 1971.
He was awarded PVSM and AVSM for service to nation.
