Let’s talk about Charasho - a thread
People are sending me links to listen to if I want to hear “the original” Charasho. So let us make something clear that is also very plain. Charasho is an original song. The A part,B part, C part and D part are all absolutely original, composed by Yitzy Waldner.
That means, the core tune itself, the melody, the song that I call Charasho, is fresh, original, and I am the first one ever in history to record it.
Then there is the introduction melody, the line that the clarinet plays. That was added by the great talents at @Playmastersnj. It is a simple, generic, but very effective klezmer line. Some variation of that line can be found in many old Yiddish/klezmer recordings.
Then there is the part of the song that we call the bridge or the breakdown. That’s when we take the old Russian tune of Kalinka and put the words Slava B-gu, Charasho. This tune is an EXTREMELY popular and well known tune in a gigantic part of the world. It would have been
crazy of us to think we could pull a fast one on people and pretend that this was an original song. The whole shtick was to use this very popular song that everybody recognizes and put it in our song about thanking G-d. People who know the song got the shtick. People who found it
later thought we were trying to pull a fast one on them and got caught. Nisht Azoi. It’s a shtick, and the people who were meant to get it got it. I think.
