Let's go diving: A thread about Baia, the best site you haven't visited in Italy.
Baia is located west of Pozzuoli. It is often called the Beverly Hills of ancient Naples, as it contained a number of wealthy senators villas and an imperial palace. While it is a cliche to call something the "Pompeii of xyz", this certainly could be called an underwater Pompeii.
I was filming on 8mm w/Eumig Nautica & digital w/GoPro, so both footage is poor. However, I am going to use the GoPro to walk you through the educational experience of diving Baia. Look for shapes rather than detail - marine growth is on everything (column and brick wall below).
Mosaics! Baia has them - and has been the testbed for in situ conservation techniques (by the world renown @BarbaraDavidde ) for long-term preservation on the seafloor. This mosaic type is called opus tessellatum, made of small squares, and the type most people are familiar with.
But another type of floor is present at Baia, called opus sectile, located in the imperial palace. Spot the difference? It is composed pieces of stone cut to fit the design, rather than large numbers of similarly sized squares like the opus tessellatum.
There is also this second opus tessellatum mosaic on display which depicts two wrestlers. Rumor in the dive shop is that a new mosaic was found and will be undergoing conservation soon - but will have to wait for news from @BarbaraDavidde !
Basalt! Large basalt blocks were used to construct roads due to the stone's hardness & durability. Several roads run through Baia which are currently visible. Here you can see the road (left) & a water channel running parallel recessed in the ground (right). @raylaurence1
Ok it is late here - Tune in tomorrow for construction using bricks, bath complexes, statues, and more.
