Look, I’m not saying this to be a fear mongerer or anything. I sincerely believe that the current UCP government is an active threat to democracy. What follows is a thread of why I believe that to be so. #abpoli #ableg
Let’s start with suppression. These are attempts to mitigate opposition to his regime #abpoli #ableg
Starting from before his premiership, @jkenney was in a bit of trouble. Reports of UCP members not recieving voter codes if they were in opposition to him began to crop up. RCMP investigate. #abpoli #ableg
Other irregularities happen during the election. Several Alberta Party supporters recieve phone calls from someone claiming to be Mandel, telling these supporters to vote strategically for UCP. #abpoli #ableg
In office, @jkenney has fired the commissioner responsible for investigating his leadership campaign. While he claims that this would not interfere with the investigation, it also doesn’t look good. #abpoli #ableg
Then there is the war room. A 30 million dollar organization tasked with routing imagined foreign funded opposition to O&G. In effect, it’s just a propaganda wing of the government with the authority to disrupt environmental movements under the guise of foreign funding. #abpoli
They also threaten to remove charity status from orgs like the Suzuki Foundation, which would cripple their political organizing and benefit the UCP by financially disrupting an opponent. #ableg #abpoli
Then there’s #BillH8, a bill that disrupts the abilities of Alberta’s LGBTQ2S+ students from being able to safely associate and create spaces of opportunity for themselves and organizations from which their voices can be heard and amplified. #ableg #abpoli
During the quarantine, energy minister @sonyasavage reveled in the fact that due to COVID-19 restrictions, anti-pipeline protestors would not be able to gather and protest. #abpoli #ableg
We also now have #Bill1, which prevents protest around “critical infrastructure.” The problem is two fold. For starters, critical infrastructure is defined as basically whatever the government thinks is critical. Meaning that it can be anything. #abpoli #ableg
The second problem is criminalizing protest all together. This bill came out after the #ShutDownCanada protests, which were anti-pipeline in nature. However, at the time, there was no legal mechanism for the UCP to disrupt them, relying on counter protestors to do that. #abpoli
The second big theme of the UCP’s anti-democratic streak comes in the form of intimidation. Similar to suppression, these are means by which they mitigate opposition, this time through threats and rhetoric. And there is a lot. #ableg #abpoli
@MattWolfAB’s entire career is based on intimidation. He actively intimidates, harrasses, mocks and belittles Albertans who raise concerns about the actions of the UCP on twitter and makes a six figure salary doing it. #abpoli #ableg
@doug_schweitzer famously dismissed criticism from @nenshi by telling him to get his own fiscal house in order and that “Trudeau’s mayor is out to lunch” in an attempt to vilify @nenshi rather than address his concerns. #abpoli #ableg
Before the election, @UniteAlberta made a public list of individuals on Twitter who they believed to be NDP staffers. This is usually a tactic authoritarians do to have their supporters attack their opponents. Deeply concerning. #abpoli #ableg
Most recently @jkenney had told @SPhillipsAB that she should ask her question outside and open herself up to legal action on the part of car insurance companies. #abpoli #ableg
Then there were the actions of @shandro, who reportedly harrassed a doctor who was in opposition to UCP healthcare cuts from their driveway. #abpoli #ableg
This is a track record of openly anti-democratic behaviour on the part of the governing party. We can no longer view them like we did the PCAA or the Wildrose in the past but actually view them as a substantial threat to the democratic values Albertans hold dear. #ableg #abpoli
