Conversations are being had about the myth of the strong Black woman .

Caused me to think about James Marion-Sims, "the father of gynaecological surgery" who perfected his surgical techniques by operating w/o anesthesia on
enslaved Black women (1/3)
Many Black women died due to his reckless experimentation. Bodies in mass graves. Once perfected he went to Europe to treat white women (with anesthesia). Black womens bodies were sacrificed for white women. (2/3)
Not much has changed when you consider that Black women are fives times more likely to die in childbirth than white women because of medical racism.

The convos being had abt Strong Black women are centred on emotional pain, but it stems from myths about physical endurance (3/3)
As someone diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and CRPS at 6 years old after repeatedly being told "Im exaggerating" "you can handle it/all in your head" because not many black children are diagnosed with such. I can testify of this ridiculousness. Even examined by a psych team.
I make such comparisons as the main focus of this thread is the "Strong Black Woman" stereotype, and how it has affected BW in many ways in healthcare/science/medicine
*Black women were left with severe complications arguably some leading to their deaths. But many enslaved babies died due to another experiment he performed on their skulls. This experiment had a 100% fatality rate 😪 He would then use their corspes to do autopsies.
Also unclear whether white women were given anesthesia, quite a few sources say he did, though he claims he didn't. Either way the main point is that he didn't treat WW until it was completely *safe* to do so and this was at the expense of BW.
