"Field Marshal" Haftar? Is he a real Field Marshal?

The commander of the militias in eastern Libya was promoted to the Field Marshal rank by the president of the Tripoli parliament, Aguila Saleh. Yet, is that an appropriate promotion? (1/10)

After Haftar’s coup attempt in 2014, Haftar was issued as the chief of staff by the president of the Tripoli parliament in March 2015. (2/10)

On the other hand, the Skhirat agreement signed in Tunisia with the UN determined the Government of National Accord as the legitimate political body of Libya. (3/10)

After taking the office, the GNA declared Haftar an insurgent leader due to his rogue behaviors.

Although the legitimate governing body of Libya was determined as the GNA by the UN, Aguila Saleh promoted Haftar to Field Marshal. (4/10)

It was the first Field Marshal promotion in the Libyan History.

To promote an officer to Field Marshal in Libya, the majority of the parliament must ratify with the approval of the president, and the vice presidents. (5/10)

Yet Haftar’s promotion was issued by Aguila Saleh. Every regulation and legislation was disregarded during this promotion. (6/10)

Although such distinguished rank has only been issued to the officers who had extraordinary military achievements, Haftar was promoted without any legitimate base. (7/10)

While this rank is not preferred by the US, there has not been a Field Marshal promotion in the world for a long time. (8/10)

Even though Russia and England are countries that promoted their officers to Field Marshal, General Motngomery(1944) and Zhukov(1943) were the last officers to obtain this rank due to their achievements over the battlefield. (9/10)

Meanwhile, the Egyptian general of staff Abdel Fattah el-Sisi who had become the leader of Egypt with a coup was equivocally promoted to Field Marshal by interim president Adly Mansour. (10/10)
