Self sufficiency in herbs: the parsley is growing like mad, can't finish it all. Basil is coming up finally (you can never have enough of it), and some volunteer flowers, watermelon and sunflower doing nicely this year. Mint is doing badly. Leeks/onions/chives growing strong.
Most is self-seeding by now. I lose some to insects, but I solve this by growing more of it and being patient: the insects eventually move on and then I end up with more than I can eat. All organics go into compost, so the soil I use grow richer every harvest. Real solar power.
In a way I'm continuing (on a micro scale) the great Tokyo/Edo tradition of soil improvement: most of Tokyo was built from the 17th c onwards on landfill, poor soil of mostly clay, but through the centuries the soil was enriched so that even small gardens fed a samurai household.
Even where there is no land left for a garden, modern Tokyoites love cramming pots of soil everywhere, even aquaculture. I've just started growing water plants myself. Not as ambitious as this street side aquaculture project with the added benefit of hiding hideous architecture.
