This is ... not quite an accurate summary of today's SCOTUS ruling. (Quick thread.)
The quickest way to understand what's wrong with the quoted tweet is to just click through to the ruling linked within it, and to read the Sotomayor statement that accompanies it. It's only three sentences. supremecourt.gov/opinions/19pdf…
Basically, all nine justices (I'm inferring) agreed a request that they make an immediate ruling allowing on-demand mail-in balloting to go forward in Texas. Emphasis on the word IMMEDIATE.
So the justices—including Sotomayor—all decided that there's no need to intervene right now in the processes that are playing out in Texas, because the election is four months away and the case is making its way through the courts.
But Sotomayor, perhaps predicting that we'd all be freaking out, gave the federal courts (and us) a little heads-up. "This is a big deal," she says to the appeals court, "and you need to deal with it in an expeditous manner."
And then she adds, in a stage whisper, "Not for nothing, but make sure you take it serious."
As the AP notes, there's a primary runoff happening in Texas soon, and this doesn't provide voters with help with that (yet, though an appellate court could), but this is very far from a "no" for November. apnews.com/0ae68b15f08f8b…
