Malaysians, you must know these names. You must know their stories- Only then will you begin to understand the global outcry of distrust against an alleged ‘arm of justice; and the movement towards its abolishment. This is police brutality in Malaysia: A thread.
Case 1:
It is now ‘cheaper’ to kill a suspect in custody-The enactment of the Civil Law Act 1956 means families of those who die in custody are not entitled to exemplary damages. Kugan Ananthan’s family was supposed to be awarded RM801,700, but the amount was cut in half. (1/8)
Case 2:
As we mourn over George Floyd, whose neck was stepped on until he died from suffocation, we must remember a similar - or worse- case of our own. This is the case of Sugumar Chelladury. (2/8)
Case 3:
Karuna Nithi was an otherwise healthy individual suffering from mild liver disease when he entered lock-up, where he was beaten until he died with 49 external injuries after only being detained for 3 days. (3/8)
Case 4:
The four police officers accused of murdering Dharmendran walked free after being acquitted by the High Court; No other police officers were charged for conspiring to cover up the murder or falsifying evidence. (4/8)
Case 5:
The police were conspiring to fabricate investigations against S. Balamurugan the same night he passed away. In direct defiance to court orders to send him to the hospital, the police rearrested him and continued to detain him until his death. (5/8)
Now, what can you do? These cases illustrate the corruption in the entire system meant to keep us safe- The police, the pathologists, and the judiciary are complicit in cover-ups, unfair trials, and the resulting injustice befalling these victims. (6/8)
Justice is fought through the remembrance of pain and humanity- We must remember these stories, and fight for accountability. This is why the IPCMC Bill is so important, and why we must do our part to make it happen. Read this to learn how: (7/8)
Cases were summarized from lawyersforliberty.org/wp-content/upl… (8/8)
