1/7 The fact that masks have not been mandatory in indoor public spaces in Ontario for the past few months is a failure of leadership, @JohnTory This should have happened months ago.
2/7 Not only was there confused messaging about masks at the beginning, there was also offside public shaming from former city officials and others, towards people wearing masks who weren't either sick or healthcare workers.
3/7 Anyone with any common sense knew that masks made sense indoors, where transmission is highest.
4/7 Someone I know over 60 had to take public transit the other day to visit her elderly mother. Someone, who was not wearing a mask, coughed repeatedly. Everyone was scared and trapped. The mask rule on the TTC didn’t come into place for another week.
5/7 Why were we okay with our TTC workers being at such risk? How can we use legal arguments to justify this? Why are we lionizing grocery store workers in print and speech but refusing to protect them in their places of work?
6/7 How about we stop banging pots and start demanding protections for the people who are keeping us fed and mobile?
7/7 As with so many other problems in Canada, we like to comfort/justify ourselves by saying that we aren’t as bad as the States. That’s not an excuse to do poorly.
(I should have specified Toronto, not Ontario, when addressing you @JohnTory. This is your city. I wonder how many people have become sick due to the lack of courage and leadership on this issue... of course masks should be mandatory in the rest of Ontario too.)
