Moments from lectures and examples of what racism looks like in medical education. A THREAD
/4 Yet again, a Black man was used as the example of an aggressive and agitated patient for us to “learn how to manage” as psychiatrists. The lecturer warned us that she used a Black man for this example because he happened to volunteer
/4 A video was then shown of this man, which I found triggering and traumatic. *I raise my hand* “Can we please have a break from watching Black men be portrayed in violent scenes?”
/4 paraphrased response from lecturer: “I gave the disclaimer. And we need to be aware that black men are often portrayed as aggressive and the bias that exists against them”
/4 Me: “I don’t need to see this visually to be made aware of that. I’ve watched my brother be brutalized by police/doctors. It’s my reality. I don’t need watch it played out for education”. *classmates all agree and vote to stop video and do slides only
/4.1 lol: lecturer apologizes profusely for being offensive and then apologizes to my white classmate (who also complained) and me. She calls him by his correct name. She calls me the name of another Black classmate.
