Here are some statistics about NY's nursing home death toll that Cuomo chooses not to cite (bearing in mind that the official number is an undercount):

In terms of total deaths, NY is No. 2 behind NJ. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
In terms of nursing home deaths per 100,000 population, New York ranks approximately sixth.

About 6% of NY's nursing home patients have died (based on 2017 patient counts), which ranks 7th.
Again, NY is under-counting its nursing home deaths, because it leaves out residents who were admitted to hospitals before they died. (Something no other state does, as far as I can tell.)

If the state counted those deaths, it would undoubtedly rank much worse.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this statistic from Cuomo's slide show -- that 66% of new hospitalizations were people living at home -- doesn't seem shocking at all.

This question seems to be about where people live, not what they do. On that basis, people living at home are significantly *underrepresented,* as you would expect.
The stat that jumps out at me is nursing homes. They house about 100,000 NYers, which is roughly 0.5% of the population, yet they account for 18% of hospitalizations.

It's not necessarily shocking, but it confirms that NH residents are at dramatically higher risk.

It's been reported that the House Democrats COVID package would increase federal Medicaid funding by 8%.

In fact, it would increase the federal matching rate by 8 percentage POINTS, which is very different -- and involves a lot more money. rules.house.gov/sites/democrat…
Eg., NY receives the minimum matching rate of 50% for most recipients. Adding 8 points to 50 would be an increase of 16% in federal funding.

On an annualized basis, NY's aid would jump more than $6B, from $40B to $46.4B. kff.org/medicaid/state…

California is now subsidizing health insurance for residents up to 600% of the federal poverty level, $154,500 for a family of four, with complex caveats based on age, household size and location. So far, 486,000 people have qualified. californiahealthline.org/news/some-rejo…
Those subsidies are couple with an individual mandate, in the form of a tax penalty for those who fail to buy insurance (with exceptions based on religion, financial hardship, etc.) californiahealthline.org/news/californi…
This structure has been suggested in New York as a path to universal coverage that would be far less costly and disruptive than single-payer. California is giving us a chance to see it in action.
