What goes into the training of an IPS officer ? We've heard many cribbing about IPS officers not able to lead units.
Let me draw a line between Police and Military leadership. Different domains, need different set of skills and experiences. In the following tweets I explain
Training lasts for 2 yrs which is further divided into 2 phases.
PHASE 1
1) 3 months- foundation course at IAS Academy
2) 12 Months- main training at @svpnpahyd
3) 6 months- practicals where cadets are posted at police stations and are sent as detachments to various org
Continued -
Cadets work as SHOs to understand the functioning of a police station.

They are also attached to -
•CRPF - to familiarise w Naxal issue & Kashmir issue
•ITBP - for mountaineering
•BSF - weapons trg (Sniper, Rocket L & mortar)
•IB - Intelligence collection
Continued
•NTRO & NATGRID - technical Intelligence

4) 1 month - State Police Academy to familiarise w their cadre

PHASE 2
5) 2 months - trg at SDPO head and Foreign attachments (mainly Israel). While in Israel, they latest learn cyber security and Internal sec techniques
The 12 month long trg at NPA is a mix of physical n academics. Physical trg includes (see pic1) and for academics (see pic2). PT includes 25 and 40 km routine marches and 16 km cross country.

Coming on to academics, the training mainly revolves around Law, IPC, CRPC, Police Leadership, Cyber Crime, Forensics and a bit of Criminology.
The toughest of all is considered to be the week long Greyhounds Commando attachment where the cadets are left in the jungle to conduct anti naxal operations with limited food and water
Some pics of in house weapons training at NPA
IPS attachments to CRPF. They are taken to Naxal hot beds of South Chhattisgarh (Dantewada) and insurgent hit areas of Assam (pic3) etc
IPS training at BSF's Central School of Weapons and Tactics. Here cadets are get their hands on Sniper, Light Machine Gun, Grenade Launcher, Carl Gustav & Mortar
IPS attachment at ITBP academy for mountaineering course.
Climbing and Scuba diving have also been introduced at National police academy
LAST
Ppl should understand that
police ≠ army.
The functioning of police Dept is different and they cater to diff set of ppl. Police doesn't fight wars (it fights insurgencies). It has to exhibit sensitivity towards ppl and their issues.
CORRECTION - Trainees are called Officers Trainees not Cadets
Lastly, i would like to thank the young IPS officers who helped me compile the info. They don't want to be named and usually stay underground. If you are reading this tweet, I thank you once again for taking out time for me.
