No lord Krishna didn't have 16000 wives.

~ a thread by awokehindu.
Many people have misconception about Lord Krishna having multiple wives, 16000 of them and often doubt his character.

Let me tell you the real story behind it.
There was a demon named 'Narkasur'. So there erupted a war between Lord Krishna and Narkasur. This Narkasur had captured 16000 girls under him. When Krishna won, he liberated those girls.
Now according to Bhagavat Puraan those girls had two choices, either become prostitutes or suicide as they had become profane or non sacred because of that demon Narkasur. Their fathers won't accept then back. So lord Krishna gave them the status of his wives.
So lord Krishna did not actually have 16000 wives because he wanted to. Many people take it as a free pass to abuse him or question his character which is just absurd.

Many also call him a womanizer and that's such a shame that they know little or nothing about the root cause.
