It's been amusing to watch some pundits trip over themselves arguing that India's ban is somehow different from China's myriad bans.

The first excuse they make is that China bans apps that don't comply with Chinese law, and that India's ban is different.

True, but incomplete.
First of all, it's not necessary to pass actual legislation for EVERY decision. A directive is enough in such cases.

The government's word IS the law. And companies have to follow it.

Here's another recent example that didn't require legislation:

Secondly, what about China's decision to delay market access to foreign companies until homegrown alternatives obtain a foothold, like for PayPal or MasterCard?

Not to mention the so-called "strategic industries", in which China doesn't allow FDI at all, but India does.
Or the decisions China takes to "punish" nations or foreign companies - from Norwegian salmon to Japanese rare earths to Korean tour groups to Australian beef...

Not to mention the retaliation for innocuous acts like meeting the Dalai Lama (what "law" does that break btw?)
Of course, China has every right to take any decision it wants in its national interests - whether to punish companies and countries for breaking the law, OR for political reasons.

Yet, it has no right to complain when other countries do *exactly* the same thing to China.
I repeat: the problem is NOT protectionism or nation-building, but rather - hypocrisy.

Perhaps it's not surprising that while China is criticizing this decision, it's not going overboard. We've seen only boilerplate government statements and clichéd GT rhetoric.
For it knows that if it doth protest too much, it'll not only sound hypocritical and over compensating, but it'll also end up sounding like a whiny little bitch.
