I’m about to head off up the mountain to where Cuchulainn killed the hound. #CattleRaid
I’m back down from Slieve Gullion, the Ulstermen have not yet installed WiFi in their mountain fort but I got some great photos #CattleRaid
If you want to hear how Cuchulainn received his name, please retweet #CattleRaid
I’ll be heading up to Emann Macha later to see where Cuchulainn was reared, but now that I’m here at Slieve Gullion I’ll tell you how Cuchulainn received his name. Btw, renaming is very important rite of passage for heroes #CattleRaid
Before Cuchulainn was Cuchulainn he was Setanta. He was hurling outside Emann Macha. The King, Connor MacNessa was invited to a feast by the smith, Culann: “bring the boy” said the Smith and the king forgot. He headed off to the fort of the smith on Slieve Gullion #CattleRaid
“Howya, boss” said Culann “you are welcome to my fort, did you forget anything?””I don’t think so” said the king “you sure?””certain”. I’ll let out my wild, insane, horrible, ferocious hound so””excellent idea, nobody can approach without getting torn to shreds” #CattleRaid
They closed the gates and let out the hound. He was a terror altogether with the barking and the growling. Meanwhile Setanta decided that he would like to go to the feast as well and he followed the king. He walked up the mountain, hurley and ball in hand #CattleRaid
Meanwhile, the boys inside in the fort were having the craic. Suddenly, the king remembered that the boy was following him “Holy moly! The boy” yelled the king “he’ll be torn asunder. Just then the hound who had been making an awful racket, got even worse #CattleRaid
They were all horrified but they knew that by the time they finished their drinks and ran to the ramparts, they would be too late. The hound would have eaten poor little Setanta and everyone agreed that this would be a pity #CattleRaid
Setanta was approaching the fort. The hound saw him. He saw the hound. The king saw them both. The king held his breath, the hound howled, Setanta wondered what all the fuss was about #CattleRaid
The hound came running, slobbering, barking insanely with hunger and delight, mouth open, teeth bared. It was actually incredible. The king closed his eyes, the Smith was happy enough that the hound was doing his job #CattleRaid
Cuchulainn was calm in inverse proportion to the hounds wildness - in other words very calm. He tossed his hurling ball in the air and gave it a mighty skelp. The open-mouthed hound didn’t know what hit him. The ball was like a bullet, into his mouth, down is throat #CattleRaid
Everyone was delighted “phew, we are delighted and relieved” said everyone except Cullen “look at the cut of my poor dog” he cried “Don’t worry” said Setanta I’ll guard your fort until you get a new dog””that’s an excellent plan” said everyone #CattleRaid
And that is how Cuchulainn became Cuchulainn; the Hound of Culann and it all happened on the mountain behind me #CattleRaid
