When u put the onus of ‘mental fitness’ on the individual,u snatch responsibility from the oppressive hierarchies that contribute to their mental health stressors, make them vulnerable to violence + reduce their access to resources.Stop listening to influencers acting like experts
Since nothing pisses me off more than misinformation about mental health and the romanticisation of mental wellness, I’m going to take some time to bust some myths by this influencer. Firstly, if these are ‘truths’, I’d like to see citation backing the claims.
‘Feeling depressed’ is not some individually created choice. It’s a response. Feelings are responses that your body has, so is stress. These responses are influenced by environmental factors, relationships, other stressors, even diet + sleep and more.
Also your internal biology is not at ‘fault’ with clinical depression. Yes, there’s a neurotransmitter imbalance, but this is poor language to explain the same. Depression can also be a symptom of another ailment including brain tumours, vit D deficiency, traumatic disorders etc.
Happiness is heavily romanticised and turned into a goal feeling. It’s impossible to feel one way for the rest of your life. The human brain is designed to experience a spectrum of emotions so your sadness, jealousy, anger, anxiety are all valid responses, like happiness.
This fetishising of mental health and oversimplication of how things can be ‘fixed’ with just listening to coaches, talking to friends is dismissive & dangerous. What if coaches don’t help? What if ur nugget of wisdom is irrelevant? Is it the individual’s fault for not healing then?
Claims like these also make it sound like mental health concerns are a ‘privileged problem’ to have. No, it’s a structural problem. Unless those systems are dismantled and we’re not talking about factors of resiliency, your coaches are not even scratching the surface.
Sure, physical exercise is a start because the body benefits from movement but this is also such an ableist claim that also doesn’t account for other diagnoses and concerns like body dysmorphia, eating disorders, trauma, other disabilities.
Yes, boundaries help, but do you know difficult they are to develop? How many years of unlearning it takes and the emotional labour of processing? The burden of relational trauma is not about the ‘luxury of picking your inner circle’.
Lol I wish it was as simple as that. This demonising of anger, sadness, anxiety, jealously and the others as ‘negative emotions one must prevent’ needs to stop. It already shows how little you understand about the science behind feeling responses.
Yes, meditation helps but meditation is not some new discovery science is trying to understand. Please take your whitewashed understanding somewhere else. And no, it doesn’t ‘always’ help. It can sometimes be triggering to survivors of trauma and worsen their health.
Moral of the story: Don’t listen to influencers that act like experts. Knowing words like amygdala or calling something the fault of an inner biology doesn’t mean they come from a place of knowledge. Please be careful of what you consume, like he suggested, you know.
