I’m sure there are lots of great points in this paper (which I’m about to read), but honestly, firing up cement does not feel like a great start to a national R&D strategy gov.uk/government/new…
The horror of this press release title needs to be seen in full to be appreciated. "Government fires up R&D across the country to cement the UK as science superpower” - the only possible hope is that it was written by a fired-up R&D super science bot.
“This Roadmap is the start of a big conversation” - perhaps the appalling quality of copywriting in this paper is an indicator of what we can look forward to as the arts and humanities are hollowed-out in favour of science superpowers gov.uk/government/pub…
Presumably no Lacan-reading English graduates were available to suggest a single coherent metaphor.
Even for me this is too much snark, but - honestly - how can a concept be shared or developed if it can’t be communicated properly?
This is going to be an uncomfortable for "diverse talent" who can expect to be both unlocked *and* embraced in the next four years.
"We will seize the moment to harness the ingenuity, creativity and agility shown by the R&D system over the last few months, in turn making the system faster and more responsive, resilient and sustainable, driving up confidence and securing rapid and long-lasting benefits..."
Are they hoping to create entropy?
"Our UK R&D system is world-leading, but that means we should be taking the lead in addressing problems which are visible in the R&D systems of all the leading nations and also address those which are specifically holding back the UK."
I’m going to stop now, but this has made me slightly hysterical. Pls can someone second a GCSE English teacher with a working red pen to BEIS asap.
Sorry, just one more because honestly, WHAT THE WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE. Ladies and gentlemen, we’re about to get some Latin.
"The terms ‘research’ and ‘science’ are usually used in the context of the entire academic landscape, reflecting the Latin root, ‘scientia’, meaning knowledge. All academic disciplines contribute to the vigour of the research endeavour…
… including the natural sciences, technologies, medicine, the social sciences, the arts and the humanities.” What happened there? Did someone receive a substantial blow to the head?
