NYC is not isolated from the nat'l trends on covid.

While overall ER visits here for covid-like symptoms are steady, visits for younger people are trending up.

No age group is immune from this virus. We need everyone--including young people--to treat this as deadly serious.

NYers are gathering outside. Period. Just telling people to stop won’t work. Shaming won't work.

Instead we need to give people clear guidance on the coronavirus risks of different types of outdoor gatherings. And we need to explain how those risks can be minimized. 1/
At this point it should go without saying (though unfortunately it still does need saying): WEAR A MASK. Avoid handshakes and hugs. Wash your hands regularly, or use sanitizer as plan b. And if you are sick or have been exposed, stay home. 2/
We know that outdoor gatherings are safer than indoor gatherings. But at a time when there are still 300-400 new coronavirus cases per day in NYC, there is risk in any social interaction. Here is how you can understand and minimize that risk for 8 different outdoor activities: 3/

Today--at this moment of crisis and pain--NYC begins Covid-19 contact tracing.

The City must guarantee that this will not under *any circumstances* be carried out via enforcement.

And it needs to bring in communities of color as full partners in leading the program. 1/
Starting today, those who test positive will be called by a City employee & asked to share names/contact info of anyone they've been in close contact with (defined as within 6ft for 10 min or more).

If you don’t answer the contact tracer’s call they will knock on your door. 2/
Those with the virus will be told to fully isolate for up to 14 days--meaning not leave home for any purpose, including getting food or walking the dog. And if remaining at home with other family members would be a risk, you will be asked to relocate to a hotel. 3/

The "just say no" approach is not sustainable.

In the real world we need to give people the tools to understand--and minimize--the risks of in-person interactions.

The CDC has failed to offer this kind of guidance. So here's advice on how to think about 9 social situations. 1/
Interacting with people outside your household carries risk. This can--and should--be minimized at all times through maintaining physical distance, wearing a face covering, washing your hands, and avoiding touching your face. 2/
For each of the activities below, I describe the level of risk and ways to minimize it.

But remember this is a deadly disease, and can hit anybody. Those over 65 or with underlying health problems need to be extra cautious. 3/
