1/ Our latest blog looks at @newcastlecc’s plans to create #SpaceForDistancing on #GosforthHighSt to allow shops to remain open & comply with the Government’s rules.

2/ As well as enabling #PhysicalDistancing these changes will also enable walking & cycling as an alternative to driving. This is important if we want to avoid gridlock as public transport can not operate to normal capacity. spaceforgosforth.com/enabling-busin…
3/ Key changes for GosHiSt:
Wider pavements RegentCentre-ElmfieldRd
Waiting areas bus queues
Protecting existing RegentCentre-ChristonRd cycle lane
New Pedestrian Crossing HenrySt-SpitalTer
Disallowing left turn lane at @GosforthHotel
Pavements might be 1way (this isn’t clear)
4/ The #GosforthHighStreet changes will be temporary changes to trial measures before making them permanent. You can give feedback here: safegosforthhighstreet.commonplace.is/schemes/propos…
5/ We think the benefits of the scheme will be
Changes are being made quickly to minimise transmission of Covid-19
More space will be created for customers which should help businesses offset some negative consequences of #PhysicalDistancing rules
spaceforgosforth.com/enabling-busin…
6/ Benefits (2)
Crossing GosHighSt will be easier & safer as the distance to cross will be much less. Hopefully this will solve current issue of some drivers going through crossings on red when large vehicles obscure the lights. spaceforgosforth.com/enabling-busin…
7/ Benefits (3)
Changes will reduce people’s exposure to air pollution as they will be further away from vehicle exhausts. Restrictions may also reduce traffic & pollution levels
Should reduce dangerous over-taking & undertaking manoeuvres. spaceforgosforth.com/enabling-busin…
8/ Narrower carriageway should encourage compliance with 20mph limit
Safer protected cycle lane will stop the encroachment of cars in the Regent Centre lane & enable more people to cycle north & to the city centre (but not to #GosHiSt itself) spaceforgosforth.com/enabling-busin…
9/ Further points to consider
Plans do not enable safe cycling to/across GosHiSt. - families & less confident cyclists (i.e. most people) still have difficulty access local shops & services (including schools) by bike. We would like this to be addressed in a future iterations
10/ We expect the plans to discourage speeding but would like extra signage of the 20mph section
We’re not convinced a 1-way system is necessary as in most locations pavements can be wider by 4m. We favour trialling the scheme without 1-way system & introducing it if necessary.
11/ Closing the left turn lane risks more traffic on HenrySt & RegentRoadNorth. This is a particular concern re schoolchildren as these streets are next to @archibald1st & #GosforthJuniorAcademy. This needs to be monitored to see if further action is needed on these streets.
12/ Deliveries might need more use of back lanes & changes on side streets so short-stay parking becomes loading bays. More disabled parking bays might be needed. Here is our 2016 map of disabled parking bays google.com/maps/d/viewer?…
13/ We expect plans to be beneficial for pollution but further measures are required in line with @newcastlecc's air pollution plans to ensure legal limits are adhered to esp retrofitting of buses with clearer engines spaceforgosforth.com/final_pollutio…
14/ Daily updates on air pollution levels are available from our twitter feed linked to the GosHiSt monitor. twitter.com/AirGosforthHiSt
