I am delighted to share the remaining two projects from our course on Lahore's cultural and social history.

(1) Reimagining Lahore as a Hindu City

#WalkingInTheCity
The project takes us back to the time when the Hindus of Lahore were a vibrant part of city's social, religious, and political landscape. The city was central to various intra-Hindu polemics, religious reform movements, and nationalist politics.
They set up rival religious organizations, colleges, and discussion forums. We introduce you to figures like Agnihotri of Dev Samaj, Ruchi Ram Sahni - a devout Brahmo and professor of science at Government College, and Lala Lajpat Rai- an ardent Arya Samaji and Indian nationalist
Urdu served as a cultural idiom for Hindu religious thought and articulation of a Hindu qaum. The poetry published in Urdu newspapers glorified 'Hindu martyrs' who had died because of communal violence, sung praises of Krishna, and talked about the miseries of Hindu moneylenders!
The time when Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was invited by Jat Pat Todak Mandal (5 Montgomery Road) to deliver a lecture but later disinvited because of his radical views on caste and Hinduism. 'The Annihilation of Caste' was a lecture that was supposed to be delivered in Lahore.
Here are some beautifully designed cover pages of special issues published by the 'Hindu newspapers' of Lahore.
'Reimagining Lahore as a Hindu city' is primarily based on extensive archival notes shared by Professor @NeetiNair . Given our limited resources and time constraint, we could only focus on a fraction of the material she had provided. Excellent designing by @plotreeViz
